🚒 Fire Hazard Severity Zone Update

The State of California has updated its Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps, which identify wildfire hazard areas across the state. As required by law, the City of San Rafael must adopt these maps—but first, we want to hear from you.
Impact on San Rafael: The City does not anticipate significant or immediate changes for residents or City projects based on these updated maps. This is due to three key reasons:
-
Alignment with Existing Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) – The maps largely mirror the City’s current WUI boundaries, which enforce specific building code requirements.
-
Citywide Vegetation Standards – San Rafael enforces vegetation management standards citywide to reduce wildfire risk for all properties.
-
Ongoing Fire Risk Reduction Work – City staff are actively prioritizing wildfire mitigation efforts in high-risk areas and collaborating with partners like Marin County Parks to manage risks strategically.
Provide input: The City welcomes public feedback on the updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps before their adoption. Please share your thoughts by April 7, 2025, by emailing srfd.dspace@cityofsanrafael.org.

🏠 First Sanctioned Camping Area participant finds permanent home
The Sanctioned Camping Area (SCA) program achieved a significant milestone this month with its first participant transitioning to permanent housing. Another individual has received a housing voucher and is actively searching for an apartment.
Why it matters: These successes show that with the right support, lasting housing solutions are possible. Outreach staff and case managers are working hard to keep the momentum going, making sure other participants have everything they need to apply for housing as soon as they get their vouchers.
Increased support: The first Encampment Resolution Fund-3 (ERF-3) housing-based case manager began this week with a caseload of 17 individuals. As a result, 60% of site participants are now receiving housing case management. Additionally, the County of Marin’s Health and Human Services Division will present a contract for two more case managers and one outreach worker to the Board of Supervisors on April 15.
For any questions regarding the City’s response to homelessness, or the Sanctioned Camping Area, please contact the City’s Community Services Division at endhomelessness@cityofsanrafael.org.

Community input is essential in guiding these priorities. Share your thoughts by completing the online survey to voice your priorities and suggestions. The submission deadline is June 1, 2025.
