Public Information Meeting for the Canal Neighborhood and surrounding area

Posted on November 22, 2022

The City of San Rafael invites residents of the Canal, Spinnaker, Bay Point, Bahia and surrounding neighborhoods to a virtual public meeting to share information and solicit feedback on a number of neighborhood improvements planned for the general area.  The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. The link to participate is  https://tinyurl.com/Canal-Improvements.      The meeting will be designed to accept public comments and will be translated to Spanish.

Background:

On September 29, 2022 the Taskforce met and discussed  the summary of recommendations developed over the past meetings and summarized by W-Trans Transportation Consultants. A total of nine measures received unanimous support by the Taskforce members. The measures, aimed primarily at providing the needed supply of parking, were categorized into short-term, mid-term and long-term solutions. The expected outcome would potentially provide a total of 90 new all-day parking spaces and a total of 322 weekend and evening parking spaces.

The short-term measures include funded projects underway like the Spinnaker Park Improvement Project, the lifting of the four-hour parking restrictions during evening and weekends and striping of on-street parking space striping designations (T’s and L’s). The long-term solutions are dependent on submitted grant funding applications exceeding six million dollars. The requested funds are aimed at improving transportation modal choices and the overall quality of life for all residents. The funding application are congruent with the recently completed and Council-approved Canal Access Transportation Study.

The taskforce will reconvene in the Spring of 2023 to allow for many of the measures to be implemented and explored. During this time, the Taskforce will receive e-mail updates every six weeks. In addition, the City is developed a webpage to inform all residents of the progress made on many on-going projects and activities in East San Rafael.
