San Rafael Volunteers
If you are inquiring about volunteering or helping out victims of the Canal apartment fire, the best way to do that is to contribute to the fundraiser here. Monetary donations and gift cards are the most helpful forms of support at this time. Physical gift cards and cash donations may be dropped off at Canal Alliance at 91 Larkspur St. in San Rafael.
Please do not show up to volunteer at the temporary shelter, and please do not bring items to donate.
Follow the following accounts for updated information as things develop: City of San Rafael News and Fire Department News Releases.
Thank you for your interest and generosity.
If you are interested in volunteering for the City of San Rafael, please reach out to the department that best matches your interest area and see if they have any need for volunteers. If they do, come back here and apply online so we can set up an interview or otherwise get you started.
Potential volunteer opportunities
Volunteer and community service opportunities with the Recreation Division
The City of San Rafael Recreation Division welcomes volunteers and individuals seeking to complete community service hours. The City operates three community centers – the Albert J. Boro Community Center, Terra Linda Community Center, and the San Rafael Community Center - each with different volunteer opportunities and needs.
Volunteers may help support programs, special events, park or shoreline clean-ups, or other tasks. Typical community service assignments may include light janitorial tasks such as restroom cleaning, litter pick-up and removal from community centers or parks, window washing, or other tasks as assigned by staff. To inquire about volunteering or community service hours with the Recreation Division, please contact the Community Centers directly. More information about the centers, including contact information, can be found below.
After you have confirmed there is an opportunity available for you, apply online using our application form.

If you’re interested in making a difference in your community, consider applying to serve on one of our boards, commissions, or committees. Interviews are held each Spring and Fall, but you can submit an application anytime — we’ll keep it on file until the next round!
