Throughout the year, the City takes multiple measures to protect and prevent wildfires in parks and open spaces. On the morning of September 26, in support of the City’s efforts to prevent and prepare for wildfires, the City’s Homeless Encampment Action Team (made up of Fire, Police, and Public Works staff) hiked the San Rafael Hill to search for and clear out fire hazards–including illegal encampments. A total of 12 illegal encampments were located and cleared, 11 of which were on private property. The San Rafael Fire Department worked to both document the endeavor and to develop a plan for private landowners to control the vegetation in order to discourage future encampments. You can read more about the City’s wildfire prevention efforts in this informational report that was presented to the City Council on August 20.
