Marin Voice: In the face of tragedy, San Rafael came together
In the early hours of August 21, a devastating fire tore through an apartment complex in San Rafael’s Canal neighborhood, claiming two lives and displacing 55 residents. Amid the heartbreak, the community responded with extraordinary courage and compassion. Neighbors rescued each other with ladders, first responders acted swiftly, and nonprofits, city staff, and agencies mobilized within hours to provide shelter, resources, and support.
The response was a powerful display of what makes San Rafael unique: seamless collaboration, deep solidarity, and a shared commitment to care for one another. As families begin the long journey of recovery, the City remains dedicated to ensuring they have the support they need to rebuild their lives—right here in the community they call home.
