At the last City Council meeting, the City Council discussed a request from the City of Novato to apply jointly for a comprehensive Quiet Zone that would stretch from downtown San Rafael north through Novato. A Quiet Zone is a defined area of track where the horn is not required to sound (except when at a station or in an emergency). Over the last couple of years we have been working with SMART to ensure all our San Rafael crossings meet all the federal requirements. This action would cause us to refile our existing Quiet Zone application, to cover a much larger area, provided that there is time to do so before the start of SMART’s commercial operations. At the Monday, October 17 City Council meeting, the Council will consider this request.
