San Rafael, CA – At 5:36 a.m. this morning, 911 dispatchers received a report of a structure fire at a three-story, wood-frame apartment complex located at 516 Canal Street, where approximately 55 people lived.
When the first San Rafael Fire Department units—just blocks away—arrived, the building was already fully engulfed. Residents were fleeing, and firefighters immediately focused on saving lives. The San Rafael Police Department was instrumental in assisting with evacuations.

At least 8 injuries, including one resident transported immediately to the hospital in stable condition.

The fire was brought under control in approximately one hour.

Mutual aid partners provided critical support that enabled successful evacuations and fire containment.

Fire crews and investigators remain on site to ensure full extinguishment and determine the cause of the fire.

The Al Boro Community Center at 50 Canal Street has been converted into a shelter for displaced residents and will remain open at least through Monday. Please do not go to the Al Boro Community Center unless you were directly affected by the fire and need support.

“This was a fast-moving fire that displaced dozens of our residents,” said Deputy Fire Chief Sinnott. “Our first priority was life safety, and thanks to the swift actions of firefighters, police, and mutual aid partners, we were able to evacuate residents quickly. We are now focused on supporting those impacted and ensuring they have the resources they need.”
The public is asked to avoid the Canal Street area while emergency crews continue their work.
