Public Safety Center
Demolition & Construction Activities for a new Public Safety Center
Our effort to build a new public safety center across the street from City Hall is well underway and construction begins soon! Demolition will be starting in September. The project is a new, 44,000-square-foot Public Safety Center for fire, police and emergency services to replace the existing Fire Station 51 (Downtown Fire Station). The project includes a subterranean garage, public plaza and associated site and landscaping improvements.
What to expect?
Demolition of Fire Station 51, the Blue House and Parking Services are in this phase of work. Excavation of the site will commence upon the building demolition. This excavation will be up to 6 feet deep. This phase will be completed mid-November 2017.
Parking Lot at 5th and D will be closed permanently.
The 5th and D Parking lot will be permanently closed on or around September 5th. Additional parking is available at 5th & C or 3rd & C parking structures. You may reach Parking Services for additional information at 415-458-5333.
When will construction of the new building begin?
Construction plans have been submitted to the Building Department for review. This process will take a number of weeks before construction permits are issued.
Meanwhile, the City of San Rafael has issued a RFQ (Request for Qualifications) to solicit Statements of Qualifications from qualified contractors. This is an important process, it helps to ensure good quality bids from experienced contractors.
Construction activities are expected to begin in December of 2017.
