Lionel Ashcroft, Citizen of the Year 2006

Lionel Ashcroft has been selected as the recipient of the Citizen of the Year award due to his community involvement. He and his family have been residents of San Rafael for forty years, and Lionel has devoted much of his fife to the research, documentation and sharing of San Rafael’s history as an author, teacher, and storyteller.

Lionel has been a true friend and benefactor of the San Rafael Library, helping the Book Fund Committee to offset budget reductions and headlining fundraisers, including amazing impersonations of Andrew Carnegie.

Lionel served as an active member of the Critical Facilities Committee to prioritize safety facility improvements, but then supporting revenue enhancements that would become the Measure S campaign.

Lionel’s community involvement has been characterized by his passion, humor, intellectual curiosity and dedication to his community.

The San Rafael City Council expresses its appreciation to Lionel Ashcroft for his efforts on behalf of his community and hereby awards him the Richard O’Brien and the Mary Ferrario O’Brien Citizen of the Year Award.
