The United States Census is conducted every 10 years in accordance with the U.S. Constitution. It is the most expansive peacetime exercise of the federal government as it aims to count every single resident living in the entire country. A fair and accurate census is essential to numerous aspects of civic life, from allocation of billions of dollars in federal funds to political representation at all levels of government.

Unfortunately, history has repeatedly shown that certain groups – including people of color, immigrants, low-income communities, and children – are statistically more likely to be undercounted. California faces several unprecedented challenges to a complete and accurate Census 2020 count, including significant underfunding of the Census Bureau, the addition of the citizenship question, and a new online census questionnaire.

To minimize the undercount in our region, the Bay Area Census Funders Collaborative, a partnership between Northern California Grantmakers, East Bay Community Foundation, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and other foundations who are committed to ensuring a fair and complete count, have announced a grant program to support Census 2020 education and outreach efforts. The Bay Area Census Funders Collaborative will award grants to nonprofit organizations working to engage and promote the participation of hard-to-count communities in the nine-county Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma).

The Bay Area Census Funders Collaborative invites you to join us at a 90-minute information session, in which we will:

  • Present our goals and the grant opportunities
  • Review the eligibility and selection criteria
  • Describe the project proposal characteristics
  • Walk through the application portal and process
  • Review the RFP, application, and grant disbursement timeline
  • There will also be an opportunity for Q&A at the session.

Target Audience

Those in community-based organizations, cross-sector collaborations, coalitions, and/or networks.

We are hosting several RFP information sessions across the region throughout April and May. Please note that on each event page, you have the option of registering to attend in-person or online via webinar. However, once each session reaches its meeting venue capacity the in-person registration will close. In consideration of the meeting venue capacity, we ask that only 1-2 staff per organization attend the information sessions in-person. If the session you would like to attend has reached the in-person capacity, please check the other sessions to see if there is still availability. Following the first session, a recording will be made available online.

We welcome the opportunity to make this event more accessible. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Please refrain from wearing scented products, so that people with chemical sensitivities can join us. If you have any questions or requests, please contact registrar@ncg.org.
