Community Meeting: Safe Parking Program

Posted on November 10, 2025

The City of San Rafael and the Fire Department invite you to a virtual community meeting for the Safe Parking & Parking Box Program. This meeting is part of Phase 4 of the program, which is focused on narrow and winding roads where parking and emergency access pose challenges. Visit SRFD.org/safeparking for more information about the program.

Date: Wednesday, November 12, 2025
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Online via Microsoft Teams

About the Program
Many of our hillside and narrow-street neighborhoods currently rely on a “6 feet from center” parking rule, a rule that is often confusing for residents and difficult for enforcement. The new “parking box” approach will clearly define safe parking areas—using signage, painted boxes, and red-curbs—so that emergency vehicles can always access roadways and residents can safely evacuate when needed.

Phase 4 will address the Montecito, Lincoln Hill, Gerstle Park, Dominican and other areas scheduled for implementation this fall.

Why Your Input Matters

  • Ensuring that proposed markings and signage align with residents’ real-world parking use and visibility needs.

  • Helping staff understand local conditions (turning radii, sight-lines, vegetation) so the final design is clear and effective.

  • Providing an opportunity for community questions, concerns and feedback before installation begins.
