Contact:
Department of Public Works (415) 485-3355

Limits of Work:

On Canal Street from Medway Road to Capri Court

Description:
This project will improve pedestrian access and safety at four intersections along Canal St in the Canal neighborhood of San Rafael.  The selected intersections are-

  • Canal Street & Larkspur Street,
  • Canal Street & Novato Street,
  • Canal Street & Fairfax Street, and
  • Canal Street & Sonoma Street/Portofino Road.
Canal Street Pedestrian Access & Safety Map

As part of the project, the traffic operations at these intersections, with special focus on pedestrian activities, will be studied (City funded).  As warranted by the study, the intersections will be subject to the following improvements- installation of additional street lights; high visibility crosswalks with ADA-compliant accessible curb ramps; pavement legends; and signage including pedestrian crossing signs, all-way stop signs, speed feedback radar signs, etc.

The proposed project is based on the needs identified in the Community Based Transportation Plan (CBTP) developed for the Canal neighborhood in 2006, which was funded by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and developed by Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM) and the City of San Rafael.  As a community that generates a high number of pedestrian trips, the neighborhood is concerned about pedestrian safety.  The plan assigned high priority to the projects to improve traffic operations and pedestrian facilities in this neighborhood.
