The San Rafael Police Department acts as the lead agency to enact the "Avoid the Marin 13" DUI enforcement program during three major holiday periods. The goal is to reduce injuries and traffic collisions involving alcohol intoxicated drivers.
“Avoid” campaigns consist of DUI checkpoints and strike teams that are staffed by multiple law enforcement agencies within the County during the Christmas to New Year’s, Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. The Police Department has arranged with all 13 agencies in Marin (California Highway Patrol, Marin County Sheriff’s Department, College of Marin, Novato, Belvedere, Sausalito, San Anselmo, Fairfax, Twin Cities, Tiburon, Ross, Mill Valley and San Rafael) to operate three checkpoints over Christmas through New Year’s, one checkpoint for Memorial Day and one for Labor Day weekends throughout the County. Each department will send an officer or two to one or more checkpoints.
The Grant requires use of grant funds for public relations services for the “Avoid the Marin 13” DUI reduction campaign. The State has determined that the benefit of the campaign is not only the intensified enforcement of DUI laws but also in the publicity generated for local agencies by which the community is advised of the project and become involved in reducing the problem. We have worked with The tmd Group for these services since first funded.
The Office of Traffic Safety for the State of California has funded the City of San Rafael Police Department to act as liaison agency for The Marin Police Chief’s Association since 2001 for the purpose of coordinating the “Avoid the Marin 13” DUI reduction campaign. The Office of Traffic Safety funds “Avoid” campaigns in all nine Bay Area counties to participate in a regional education and enforcement program. To view "Avoid the Marin 13" and all other Avoid agency enforcement data and press releases, visit the Avoid Website
