What are the guidelines for children’s group and class visits to the San Rafael Public Library?

A group visit is an excellent opportunity to learn about the library. Visits may include an introductory tour of the library’s materials and services, instruction on finding books and information, storytime, and/or book talks.

How do I arrange a group visit?

In order to make your visit a quality experience and to make sure the library can accommodate your group, meet the needs of our walk-in patrons, and avoid conflicts with already scheduled library programs, we ask that you follow these guidelines: Groups of 5 or more must book a visit 2 weeks in advance with the Children’s Services staff. Call or stop by the Children’s Services Desk (485-3322) to schedule a visit. Please be aware that we will have to find a time which avoids conflicts and when there is sufficient staff to accommodate your group.

How do I get library cards for my group?

Please contact the Circulation Supervisor (485-3323) if you would like your group to obtain library cards. Library card applications need to be returned at least two weeks prior to your scheduled visit if the children are to pick up their cards on the day of the visit.

Can I bring my group to regular storytimes or library programs?

We cannot accept groups into our regularly scheduled Baby Bounce or Toddler Time as these public programs involve one-on-one participation. Preschoolers, ages 3-5, in groups less than five, may attend Preschool Storytime. Groups of 5 or less (ages 5-12) may come to regularly scheduled programs for school age children. Groups must be accompanied by an adequate number of responsible adults.

How many times may a group visit the library?

We would like to accommodate as many day cares, schools and organizations as possible in the City of San Rafael, our service area. Since staffing is limited, we will allow classes and groups two scheduled visits per year. Groups must be accompanied by an adequate number of responsible adults so staff can meet the needs of our walk-in patrons.
