Library Policy
The Library’s Internet access is intended primarily as an information resource.
The Internet allows users to connect to a vast array of information that can be personally, professionally, and culturally enriching.
The San Rafael Public Library has no control over the content of the resources nor does the library have complete knowledge of what is available on the Internet.
Library staff and the InfoPeople Project have identified specific starting points for searches and links to sources on the Internet, which are consistent with the Library’s mission and organizational values.
Internet users are cautioned that the terminals that provide access to the Internet are located in a public area that is shared by Library users of all ages, backgrounds, and sensibilities.
►Internet users are asked to respect the sensibilities of others when accessing potentially offensive information or images.
►Use of Library computers for viewing and disseminating illegal images is not permitted.
►Viewing sexually explicit images is prohibited. Remember that children are present in all areas of the Library. (Revision April 2002)
►Internet users who make any unlawful use of the Internet may be banned from using the Library’s Internet resources and may be prosecuted.
►Misuse of Internet privileges or violation of Library policies may result in the withdrawal or suspension of Internet privileges.
►Sites on the Internet change often and unpredictably.
►The Library cannot protect users from information and images that they may find offensive or disturbing.
►Library patrons use the Internet at their own discretion.
The Internet contains some material that is inappropriate for viewing or reading by children. Parents are expected to monitor and supervise their children’s use of the Internet. The Library staff is not in a position to provide monitoring or supervision.
All children age 14 or under must have a signed parent consent form when they wish to use the adult Internet computers. A parent’s signature is required on a form that is available at the Circulation Desk.
Library staff will develop rules and procedures as necessary to insure fair and reasonable use of Internet resources.
Information on the Internet may be reliable and current or it may be inaccurate, out-of-date, or unavailable at times.
Users are encouraged to use critical judgment in evaluating sites accessed on the Internet.
The San Rafael Public Library assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from its connection to the Internet.
Library staff will assist users with the Internet as time permits, but cannot offer personal instruction.
Formal instruction or information on Internet use may be offered at designated times.
Internet users are encouraged to take advantage of the Internet and to exercise good judgment and discretion when using the Internet.
