Recycle Your Batteries
San Rafael fire stations, along with the Corte Madera, Kentfield, Larkspur, Marin County, Marinwood, Mill Valley, Nicasio, Southern Marin, Tiburon, and Ross Valley Fire Departments are joining in a recycling effort to encourage residents to recycle home batteries instead of throwing them in their home garbage.

Each fire station will be outfitted with an official bright blue metal battery disposal can that will be placed in front of the fire station or other convenient locations in the city. Residents can drop off their used batteries any time of day or night. Inside the can is a five gallon bucket that will be emptied by the station personnel and taken down to the Marin Recycling Permanent Household Hazardous Waste facility.

A recent national survey found that respondents use an average of five cordless products in their day-to-day lives. A similar study conducted in 1999 found that on average, consumers used an average of three cordless products.

"The rise in number of cordless products that are used everyday indicates that people are growing increasingly reliant on using rechargeable batteries to power their daily lives," said Captain Specialst Brad Mark. "Yet, many consumers still don't realize just how many of these products are powered by rechargeable batteries which can be recycled."

The list of cordless products powered by batteries includes cordless and cellular phones, cordless power tools, laptop computers, electric toothbrushes, palm pilots, camcorders, handheld mini vacuums and remote controlled toys.

"The goal of this program is to take regular household batteries (AAA-D sizes) along with recyclable batteries found in technological items, and keep them out of the landfill system as much as possible. As a community resource to the public, the fire stations offer convenient drop-off locations for residents and hopefully will help make this program a success," stated Brad Mark.
